His involvement with the Trojans spanned 5 decades, from his time as a quarterback (he threw the game-winning touchdown pass in the comeback upset over Notre Dame in 1964) to an assistant coach (he was on the staff of 2 national championship teams) to an assistant athletic director to a television analyst.

Thanks Scott for getting this important information out to all of us. As a member of the last Freshman Football team at USC, Coach Fertig holds a special place in my heart. He allowed me to be a "walk-on" and it was an experience I will always treasure. While Coach McKay was tough, impersonal, and aloof to us Frosh guys, Coach Fertig, who oversaw the Freshmen team, was our benefactor. How tough could it be with such future stars as AD, Haden, McKay, Wood, Phillips, Cobb, Carter, and the list goes on. And I think, to this day, Coach Fertig believed we could have beaten the Varsity. I hope our hands on coaches, Coach Houck and Couch Saunders will be there. Fight On
