Answer Monday, Part VIII

Remember back when the wide-receiver rotation was larger than the tailback rotation?

Q: Can you explain the USC Song Girl photoshop scandal?

A: The song girls website had two team photos. One removed a girl and added fake legs and a fake pon pom where the girl was sitting. It looked really amateurish and aroused suspicions of some readers. This led to me asking the athletic dept. for an explanation because people were asking me what happened.

Q: Was the completely flawed explanation the athletic department provided regarding the photoshopped song girl ("so that fans wouldn't be confused by seeing 14 girls in the web photo, but only 13 on the field") a voluntary statement by them or did you confront them about it and then they issued the statement? If you instigated it, were they surprised that people had caught on to this cover-up by the women in charge of the song girls?

A: I was the one who instigated it after a reader sent me copies of the photos. I'm sure they were surprised by this because some people were unaware of the situation. For example, the game program for the Oregon game used the original undoctored photo.
I really don't get the behavior over there. By removing the song girl in such an amateurish way, they only raise questions about the reason she left. Otherwise, most people would not notice.

Q: Did you see how Sports Illustrated has picked up on your Song Girls airbrushing scandal investigation?

A: I did now. Thanks.

About Inside USC

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
