I know I'm excited about the start of training camp, and I thought this was an appropriate way to signal the start of today's training camp.

By far, hands down, without a shadow of a doubt, THE GREATEST FOOTBALL GAME I HAVE EVER ATTENDED. I was crowd surfing, hugging and kissing strangers and rolling down the aisle of Tunnel 19 when that interception took place.

Just watching that clip gave me goosebumps. That victory will always be in my mind as my greatest moment in the Rose Bowl. Knowing that it may happen again keeps me coming back year after year. 13-9 is the magic score.

GO BRUINS! BEAT THE VOLS!!!!!!!!!!!!

as amazing as that moment was, i think i might enjoy more the postgame interviews where bruce davis calls out the espn analysts for picking usc. hilarious!

VB said:

Bruce Davis talked too much crap. He was the one who criticized Notre Dame NON-STOP and gave them motivation to kick the ever living crap out of us. Then he went on to start the "Keep Karl Dorrel as Head Coach Foundation." When that fell through he started the "Hire DeWayne Walker for Head Coach Foundation."

The guy was a great defensive end, but I'm sort of glad he is gone.

Ryan Callerson said:

Seriously, are you an objective, beat reporter or a cheerleader?

StillHatesMichaelFey said:

to be fair, VB, our offense had a lot to do with notre dame's destroying us. and the guy also had more than a handful of sacks. but i can see how some people might be put off by him. based on his appearance and loudmouthing, i always thought was someday going to do a great re-enactment of the winslow "I'm a warrior!" rant.

and man, dohn just cant win here. he tries to be short and objective and people get mad and whine that he didn't provide any analysis of the offseason training statistics, then he tries to inject a little life in the blog and gets called a cheerleader.

Thanks Brian! I AM READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL!

Callerson,

Anyone who has been following Brian's blog for a reasonable amount of time would know that Brian is far from a UCLA cheerleader. In fact, he usually gets attacked for being too negative on the program.

Hands down, the greatest game and play in my lifetime! I still vividly remember that game. The sideline challenge that went down during a 4th quarter timeout was the loudest I had ever heard a stadium get.
Thanks Brian for the video.

Thanks Brian!! i'm bouncing off the walls, sept 1st can't get here soon enough

Hey BD, I know you say you are a Bruin reporter and not a supporter, but I have to suspect even you get a kick outta watching Petey's face change from smug to indignant after watching that play.

i had like an out-of-body experience at the end of this game, life for real.

i was so into it (too into it that i didnt watch the game with my brother, a usc alum) that at the beginning of the mcneal interception play i blacked out and i heard God ask me what was more important to me, Him or this game? i said You Lord. then i came back right after the interception, so i didnt see it live, and everytime i heard something in the celebration like "we're number one!" i said, "God You're number one" or like "they cant beat us!" i said, "they cant beat You Lord" and so on... and it was an awesome experience for me! there it is, think whatever u want of it.

go Bruins! (and God) =)

You just made my day. Your blog is always my first stop for UCLA football.

When you take heat from both sides of the ball (pro- and anti-Bruin) it becomes clear you are an objective reporter. A great reporter knows how to generate excitement.

Go Bruins!

Hahaha this is some funny stuff right here! Watching a clip from a game, not last year, but TWO years ago as a motivational tool for the season?? Come on now! Good thing you guys won that game, otherwise you'd have to be digging up footage from 10 years ago!

southbaybruin said:

Yep, I'm getting goosebumps from the video too. Such a great moment that was...to see it in person was even better. 27 days and counting....Go Bruins!!

Figures that a fucla honk would have to pull footage from TWO years ago to get ready for football season..

24-7 anyone?

Losers.

HomeBruin said:

Great plays are great plays, and we can dig them up whenever we want. I'll be digging up the Tyus play every year come tournament time for the rest of my life.

BRUINzor, that sounds pretty crazy man. I remember it being kinda hot that day, were you sitting on the sunny side?

Just finished watching the tape and it does not hurt anymore. Actually, at the time I was more in shock than hurt. And I in that first moment did not understand that the ball had been intercepted, but the mad celebration around me tipped me off. And then I became resigned. And then later I joined in the jubilation. Heck, SC had had a beautiful run-- national championships in 2003, 2004, almost one in 2005, and playing ucla in the semi-finals in 2006. I am not greedy and it was fun watching so many grown-ups acting like children.

It also reminded me of the glee and relief I felt when ucla's 8-game reign ended. It is no fun losing to your rival year after year, and I think it is poetic justice that bruins' fans experienced the same depression for so many years that SC fans went through.

ONLYTHETRUTH said:

One final comment on that game. I have never seen the likes of it before. During a time-out in the 4th quarter the bruins in unison started wolfing at the trojans. SC then gathered together and snapped back at ucla. Both sides made gestures to come at each other, but it was a bluff.

Is there anything better than a SUC-UGLA match?

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
