Lockett's lesson

| | Comments (6) |

UCLA senior strong safety Bret Lockett said he understood why coach Rick Neuheisel suspended him for the season opener against Tennessee. Lockett was suspended for a violation of the team's academic policy.
"You can't take shortcuts. I understand that,'' Lockett said. "It's going to be hard (to watch the Tennessee game), but I'm going to do my best to help this team win."
Lockett has embraced the leadership role and is talking with the freshmen so they understand the defense.
"I know we need a strong safety, and I know we need a backup strong safety,'' Lockett said. "I know we're going to need somebody that can play in the dime or nickel package, so rather than sit there and cry about it, I'm trying to get the young guys prepared so they can help the team out."

This is one of the main reasons I prefer college ball to pro. If this kid were a pro he'd be making every excuse as to why he was mistreated. Instead, you get a heady college senior who takes his punishment like a man.

Yea, at SUC there never would have been a punishment in the 1st place. Maybe a lap or two, a dock in pay, or a juice injection withheld yet never playing time revoked.

Gee, say something nice about UGLA and this is what you get.

is it just me or everytime a guy gets suspended for academics and then is interviewed his response is always "i'm gonna make sure to help out the team in practice/new guys/work out in my time off" instead of "i'm gonna work on my schoolwork to make sure this doesn't happen again"?

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
