The Galaxy remain (barely) alive in the playoff hunt with 32 points, while the slumping Rapids remain on 34 with two consecutive defeats.
An own goal by former Galaxy defender Ugo Ihemelu and a 35-yard screamer from Brandon McDonald settled the matter. A late and dubious Tom McManus PK in the 88th minute wasn't enough to give the Rapids hope.
