Johnny Miller apologizes for Rocco comments

| | Comments (0) |

Johnny Miller issued a statement of apology through NBC regarding his statements about Rocco Mediate during television coverage of the U.S. Open. Miller said Rocco Mediate ``looks like the guy who cleans Tiger's swimming pool.'' He also said ``Guys with the name Rocco don't get on the trophy, do they?''
Miller's apology is below.
I didn't take offense to Miller's comments and believe Miller was, in fact, trying to pain a picture of Mediate as a regular guy rather than someone you'd expect to win a major. Mediate had just two top-10 finishes in the last five years.

"I apologize to anyone who was offended by my remarks," Miller said in a statement released by NBC. "My intention was to convey my affection and admiration for Rocco's everyman qualities and had absolutely nothing to do with his ethnicity. I chose my words poorly and in the future will be more careful."
