Danielle Kang, a 14-year-old from Oak Park, played a practice round on Monday with Alexis Thompson (the 12-year-old phenom) and with Michelle Wie on Tuesday. Kang had called and requested to play with Wie.
``She was just really nice,'' Kang said. ``It was nothing different than playing a practice round.''
With the exception of all those people, of course.
``I wasn't paying attention to that,'' Kang said.
Their round was stopped short after five holes because of thunder.

Men's golf coach O.D. Vincent is leaving UCLA to take over Duke men's golf team.

Joe Greiner (COC) has made it to the semifinals of the California State Amateur championship at Monterey Peninsula Country Club. Greiner beat Tim Honeycutt 4 and 3 on Friday. Greiner will face John McClure in the semifinals tomorrow, and if he wins, the final will be in the afternoon tomorrow.
Greiner already has completed two years at COC but will remain a third year to finish his AA degree and also will serve as a volunteer coach for Gary Peterson.

It's a girl for Tiger Woods and his wife, Elin. Sam was born on Monday, earlier than expected. Tiger had said he would be willing to miss a major for her birth, but Sam had perfect timing. She gave her dad plenty of time to play in the U.S. Open, where he finished second, and was born not even a day later. Tiger announced the birth on his Web site.

Fred Funk, Vijay Singh and K.J. Choi have joined the field for Tiger Woods' AT&T National at Congressional Country Club, July 3-8.

Michelle Wie thought she had problems? Even Annika Sorenstam has jumped on the Wie-hater bandwagon. And Annika likes everybody. She rarely says anything controversial, but even the world's former No. 1 player couldn't resist taking a shot at Wie. She had good reason. Annika hosted her first LPGA Tour event last week - the Ginn Tribute - and took exception to Wie's withdrawal after the 16th hole.

Anthony Kim, who grew up in Studio City, has qualified for the U.S. Open. He holed a bunker shot on the first hole of an 11-man playoff and parred the third and final playoff hole to qualify. Kim is the youngest player on the PGA Tour but had to go through local and sectional qualifying to earn a spot in the U.S. Open.

San Fernando High's Angela Villela received the President's Youth Leadership Award, given by the USGA and AJGA.
The national award is based on community service, leadership and character through involvement with AJGA and the USGA. Joseph Suarez of Virginia won the boys' award. Villela wrote her essay on how she got started in golf.
The two will be honored at the Rolex Tournament of Champions, one of the most prestigious junior tournaments in the country, on July 5.
Also, each award winner receives four tickets per day to a U.S. Open of his or her choice. Villela chose the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines next year.
