Man of the people

After John Daly left a news conference following the opening round, one reporter joked that Daly was wearing more advertising than a race car.
Friday, Daly had a Maxfli hat and a shirt that featured 84 Lumber and Hooters logos on the front, a Cadillac emblem on one sleeve and Mark Christopher Chevrolet and Winn Grips on the collars. Both hat and shirt also featured the lion insignia of John Daly Apparel.
"Business-wise for me, it's been great (this year)," Daly said.
On the course it has been a different matter, with Daly finishing 193rd on the PGA Tour money list.
Still, fans flock to him.
After Daly finished off a double-bogey 6 on the ninth hole Friday, a female fan shouted, "We love you John, no matter what score you make."
The previous day, while Daly signed autographs outside the clubhouse, a man said to him in a thick drawl, "Your book was the best one I ever read. Actually, it was the only one I've ever read."
Daly said he appreciates the support.
"I think people can relate to some of the things that have gone on in my life," he said. "Everybody has ups and downs.
"I'll tell you, when things aren't going good, you just want to try your best and they motivate me to keep going. The fans have been great for the 16 years I've been out here ... hopefully next year I'll be able to play better for them."
When someone mentioned to Woods that the hefty Daly had been struggling this season because of a back problem, Woods quipped, "Well, his back is bothering him because he's got that front to deal with."
Perhaps that's why Trim Spa's logo no longer graces Daly's attire.
