Beckham leaves UK, headed back to LA...

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaabecks2.jpg
Soccer star David Beckham is seen leaving England earlier today following his father's live-safing open heart surgery. Ted Beckham suffered a massive heart attack on Wednesday.
According to the UK's Daily Mail, had told officials that he intended to stay with his father "for as long as it takes".
The three children of Beckham and his wife, Victoria, are being cared for by David mother Sandra in LA.

Emily VanCamp and Sarah Jane Morris on the new season of "Brothers & Sisters"

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaemily.jpg
Emily VanCamp joined the cast of "Brothers & Sisters" late in the first season as the secret half-sister of the Walker clan. As the show makes its second season premiere tonight at 10 p.m. on ABC, VanCamp's character, Rebecca, is no longer as much of an outsider. In fact, she's living in the house of Nora Walker (Sally Field) after a falling out with her mother, Holly, who had a two-decade affair with Nora's husband.
"I think Rebecca starts to familiarize herself and connect a little more with the family," Emily told me earlier this month at a party celebrating the DVD release of the show's first season.
Not only was VanKamp's character sort of a party crasher into the family, but the actress was joining a high-profile established cast: "It was really intimidating for me, as Emily, but also incredibly rewarding to be working alongside such incredible people. I'm just so grateful every day. I am learning so much. It's very hard to be the new girl and to [have your character] be causing all this trouble."
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawettig.jpg
She has found it especially rewarding to work opposite Wettig, a three-time Emmy winner for "thirtysomething."
"They had looked a lot for the Rebecca character and [Wettig] just didn't feel like she had connected with any of them," Emily said. "I was really nervous because you never know if you're going to have that kind of chemistry or work really hard for it. But we had sort of this instant bond. We just got it. And she's got a 21-year-old daughter in real life. It's just foreworks as you could see in those first few episodes. It was pretty dramatic, crazy work."
What made Rebecca less of an outsider was the closeness she established with half-brother, Justin, who is still off serving in Iraq in tonight's season opener.
"He's the one Walker that Rebecca I think identifies with. He really sort of embraced her and welcomed her from the very beginning. They have a bond that Rebecca doesn't really have with the others. That friendship develops throughout this season as well. But this show is very character-driven and there's always twists and turns."
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasarah.jpg
Meanwhile, Sarah Jane Morris' character of Julia is still recovering from giving birth to premature twins at the end of last season - one of which did not survive. The storyline has given the actress some her meatiest scenes since the series began. Julia is married to Tommy Walker (Balthazer Getty) and is not feeling up to seeing the boisterous Walker clan in the season opener.
"At the moment, I think Julia's trying to get better. She's not doing so well, not coping very well. I think Julia's still mourning. She feels like everyone's moving on. But I don't think she's as comfortable with the decision that was made about the baby as she maybe was last season. I think she realizes she's not being very rational about it. You can't help how you're feeling sometimes."
Although the current storyline is heavy, Morris says you only have to look at some of last season's shows to see some of the more comedic moments: "The first episode where I thought the show really started clicking was 'Northern Exposure.' It was when it really had that balance of the lightness and the drama. There's a lot of funny stuff that happens in that episode and a lot of touching and moving stuff. The outtakes and bloopers and stuff are just funny. You get to see everyone kind of being themselves instead of their characters."
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaabrosandsis.jpg
OK, I've not gonna give you any big spoilers about tonight's episodes. But a few little tidbits never hurt anyone. Nora has a new haircut (don't worry, it isn't the hideous wig look she had in the season one flashbacks), Rob Lowe (Robert MacAllister) is REALLY tan in the episode. There's no explanation given but my guess is that Lowe had a really tropical summer vacation. And Kitty (Calista Flockhart) is being annoying with her "problems" which now involve her transitioning from being a political power player to a senator's wife. Poor Kitty.

A chat/Brenda Strong, the voice of "Desperate Housewives."

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaabrenda.jpg
We will hear her voice on tonight's fourth season premiere of "Desperate Housewives" but we won't see her. That's because Brenda Strong's character, Mary Alice Young, killed herself before the very first episode of the show but is the narrator. Through flashbacks, we occasionally get to see her interact on screen with Bree, Susan, Gaby and Lynette.
There may be more reason for flashbacks now that a character played by Dana Delaney has moved back onto Wisteria Lane under mysterious circumstances after a decade-plus absence.
"Thank God for Dana Delaney's character because there's a possibility that I come back in flashbacks because she knew me before I committed suicide," says Brenda, who I caught up with at the 40th anniversary party for The Advocate earlier this month.
So, I had to ask. Does she ever wished "Housewives" could just make it's first season a dream like "Dallas" did when they brought Bobby Ewing back from the dead?
"[Laughs] Yeah, can't I come out in the shower? Oprah Winfrey once asked me, 'Had you known it was going to be this big a hit you think you would have committed suicide?' I said, 'No! I would have called suicide hotline, I would have talked to my friends. Are you kidding? Of course I wouldn't!'But I had to. It was really the crux of season one. But I have to say, I have the best job in TV, I really do and I'm extremely grateful. I love saying Marc Cherry's words each week. I'm the moral center of the show and that's a very big responsibility. As much as I love to act and be on camera, I really take my job seriously. I love it."
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaabrenda.jpg
"Housewives" is not her only job. She has many projects in the works and appears in a new episode of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" this season.
"I have the best time with Larry David. We have a history because of 'Seinfeld' and have an immediate adoration society. It's such a condisive environment for actors to really do what they do best which is to be in the moment and feed off one another and to just see where it goes. It was really quite invigorating to be that free and I loved it."
She guested four times on "Seinfeld" in the 1996-97 season as Sue Ellen Mischke.
With nearly 100 TV and movie credits, Strong has also had recurring roles on "Sports Night" (co-starring "Housewives" castmate Felicity Huffman), "7th Heaven," "Everwood," and "Twin Peaks."

"Housewives" airs at 9 p.m. on ABC tonight. I've seen it and I'm gonna just spill it all right here for ya: NOT A CHANCE!

But I do want you to pay special attention to Lynette's hair, keep you eye on Bree's belly during an outdoor barbeque, the cliffHANGER involving Edie will be resolved in a pretty funny way.

Saturday morning brew...and afternoon blend...

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaakeanu-reeves-beard-03.jpg
Even Hollywood Joe has to spend a little time with his family. But I wanted to give you your daily fix of celeb goings on in one big, steaming cup. Let's start with Keanu Reeves OK? This is a very good looking man. Very. But right now, he's sporting the most hideous beard since Brad Pitt grew a really long one for a movie he ended up never making. If Keanu grew this thing for a role, I hope he got a hefty paycheck...Oscar de la Hoya has broken his silence about all that fishnet stocking stuff. Pics were all around the blogoshere of Oscar - well, at least his head - seemingly wearing fishnet stockings like it wasn't the first time he'd done it. I thought he looked terrific, even though I'm not really into cross-dressers. Well, Oscar is finally speaking out and he wants the world to know that they are PHOTOSHOPPED!!! ...I don't know about you, but I just couldn't sleep after I found out Pink was splitting from the tatooed skateboarder Cory Hart. Just kept pacing the apartment: "Pink and Cory, apart? Nooooo!" OK, kidding. But here's the good news: the are NOT splitting up! Friggen gossip sheets got it all wrong...It looks like Paris Hilton doesn't have a sense of humor about her little jail stay last summer. The heiress and wanna-be Angelina (apparently she's making a humanitarian trip to RWANDA!) was on Letterman last night and, of course, he made fun of her. I mean, what else is there to do? Talk about world peace? Hair extensions? Her boyfriend of the week? Gee, that's kinda mean of me. Oh well, too late to take it back, have already typed it...Remember the publicist who tried to extort $1 million from Tom Cruise for stolen wedding pictures? I barely do either. But the news is that this guy, whose clients have included Tonya Harding among others, killed himself. He faced up to two years in prison in the Cruise photo case.....and finally, Madonna has been nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She doesn't really send me, i don't own a single Madonna CD. But she has managed to remain relevant in the music industry for 25 years, pretty much non-stop, and she seems to be a shoo-in for induction. And let's face it, with Madonna there, it'll certainly be a memorable awards ceremony!

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasally.jpg
One more thing! I asked director Robert Benton at the "Feast of Love" premiere this week what he thought of the controversial Emmy speech given by Sally Field last weekend (Benton directed Field in "Place in the Heart" which won her a second Academy Award:
"I love Sally and I thrilled that she won. She's a great actor and deserved to win. I thought it was a terrific speech and I don't think it would have corrupted anybody's mind if they'd heard it. They may have disagreed with her but I don't think there was anything wrong, in the least, with what she said. She's a friend of mine and I love her and I think she's one of the heroic people."

Katharine McPhee is getting married...Dylan McDermott is getting divorced

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaakatharine-mcphee-engaged-12.jpg
This is sweet. American Idol album Katharine McPhee is engaged, according to OK! She will be tying the knot with actor Nick Cokas, who, at 42, is nearly two decades older than his fiancee. I interviewed McPhee a year ago at the American Music Awards and she was so lovely, so stunning. I just love the way she sings "Over the Rainbow" and love, love, lover her version of "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree."

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaadylan.jpg
Meanwhile, at the other end of the spectrum, Dylan McDermott and his wife Silvia Rose have split after 12 years and two children. In his new ABC show, "Big Shots," he plays a divorced dude still in love with his wife. I watched it last night. GREAT cast, just OK show though...

Afternoon blend...

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaliz.jpg
Snapped!
Screen legend and AIDS activist Elizabeth Taylor is apparently in love again, at age 75! Good for her! She knows a thing or two about love, having been married to seven different men (including Richard Burton, twice). When you look up star in the dictionary, all you need are the words "Elizabeth Taylor"...This just in: Jorja Fox survived the season opener of "CSI" last night but she will be leaving the show in November...Now hear this: "Prison Break" star Wentworth Miller is not gay. In the past week alone, both he and his on-screen brother, Dominic Purcell, have said so...Ben Stiller says his buddy and frequent co-star Owen Wilson is "doing really well" but wants to protect his privacy...Kiefer Sutherland has officially been charged with DUI and could face some jail time and a hefty fine. His judge? The same dude who threw Paris Hilton in the slammer. But Kiefer still showed up the day after his arrest to accept an award from the Canadian actors union ACTRA...Speaking of celebs in trouble with the law, Michelle Rodriguez is being accused of being a slacker when it comes to following the terms of her probation...Sean "P. Diddy" Combs sounds like he can be a real jerk if you judge him by his behavior as he entered some kind of party recently...and finally, Rumer Willis has gone blonde. I'm not sure if anyone cares, I know I don't. But I thought I'd throw that out there.

Friday morning brew...

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaajennifergarner.jpg
Good morning!
Ya know, Jennifer Garner is one of those famous actresses who makes it pretty tough to be snarky about. She's usually upbeat, real professional, a new mom and married to Ben Affleck. But what she hasn't had in quite awhile is a hit movie ("Catch and Release" and "From 13 to 30" bombed). She gets another chance with today's release of "The Kingdom" which casts her as an FBI forensics expert who goes to Saudi Arabia with Jamie Foxx, Chris Cooper and Jason Bateman to try and get to the bottom of a terrorist bombing. I saw it Monday and It. Is. Intense.
...Speaking of big screen flicks, I know "Transformers" made gobs of money at the box office this summer, but it gave me a headache. Who cares what I think, right? Certainly not Paramount. They have greenlit a sequel to the international smash and star Shia LaBeouf - the new "it" boy in Hollywood - will reprise his role...This seems kinda like a diss to me: Jerry Seinfeld says he has never seen "The New Adventures of Old Christine," the CBS sitcom that won his former "Seinfeld" co-star Julia Louis-Dreyfus an Emmy last year. I wonder if he caught Michael Richards racist rant on YouTube!!!...I'm sure Billy Cyrus is glad to hear this. His daughter, "Hannah Montana" star Miley Cyrus was plagued with ridiculous pregnancy rumors this week. Well, she's gone on the record saying she does not believe in pre-marital sex. Good girl!!!...I guess we can file this under "Too Much Information" but it's still kinda funny: Ted Danson told Conan the other night that because of his vegan diet, well, he suffers from some pretty bad gas! If that's not reason enough to eat a Big Mac every now and then, I don't know what is!...And finally this morning, Michael Jackson issued a firm denial that he has married his children's nanny. I guess two strange trips dow the aisle were enough for this wacko former pop star.

A chat w/Greg Kinnear...

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaakinnear.jpgWith his latest movie, "Feast of Love," opening nationwide today, I asked Greg to reflect a bit on the past decade that has seen him get an Oscar nomination for "As Good As It Gets" and act in such films as "Little Miss Sunshine," "The Matador," "Auto Focus," "Dinner With Friends," "We Were Soldiers," "Nurse Betty," and the hilarious "Stuck On You."
He had made his name in the first part of the 90s as the original host of "Talk Soup" then went over to NBC to host "Later With Greg Kinnear," taking over for Bob Costas. When I told Greg that I used to catch him on "Later" quite often, he said, "It was the smokers and the tokers at that hour." (I'm neither btw). It was while doing that show, now hosted by Carson Daly, that Kinnear was cast in the William Holden role in the 1995 remake of "Sabrina."
Since then, he's done film after film after film.
"I've had different incarnations in the business," he says. "I used to be doing marketing for a low-budget film company trying to get out posters for "Assault of the Killer Bimbos" and now, to be talking about "Feast of Love." It's metaphorically like the movie. The movie looks at love from a lot of different angles and my career has kind of looked at the entertainment business from a lot of different angles. I still feel the same way I felt when I started: I care about what I do and I try to work as hard as I can but woefully under-prepared, always, and overwhelmed by all that I don't know on a regular basis. So, in that way it's exactly the same."

Afternoon blend...

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaafox.jpg
SNAPPED!
Gee, I dunno what's worse: being charged with drunk driving or leaving the house with your hair looking like THAT.
Well, the usually glam Vivica A. Fox must not have been feeling very pretty today when she went to court to plead not guilty today for two misdemeanor drunken driving charges. She was arrested last March and faces a possible six months in the slammer and a $1,000 fine if convicted.

In a showdown of new TV shows last night, ABC's "Private Practice" beat NBC's "Bionic Woman" in overall viewers but "Bionic" won the all-important 18-49 demo...It seems that Mark Cuban and Donald Trump are engaged in some kind of feud. Would the planet continue to spin on its access if Trump was not feuding with SOMEBODY?... Powerful publicist Pat Kingsley is stepping down from the agency she founded. She's the woman who repped Tom Cruise for years and as soon as he fired her, his embarked on a series of public relations disasters...
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaafarrah_fawcett.jpgFarrah Fawcett, an actress I will alwsys love as Jill Munroe from "Charlie's Angels," is seeking alternative cancer treatment in Germany. I wish her the very best and hope she'll be back out there solving crimes with Sabrina and Kelly real soon!!! Meanwhile, the ageless Jane Seymour is blogging about her experience on "Dancing With the Stars." Jane seems to be in great shape and not very worked over, if at all, by the plastic surgeon. On the other hand, not to be unjind, but Wayne Newton has so much Botox in his face I'm afraid it affects his balance! The. Face. Does. Not. Move. (at least above the nose)...

Jacko is backo...

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamichael-jackson-luomo-vogue.jpgaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamichael-jackson-luomo-vogue-05.jpg

Michael Jackson is on the October 2007 cover of L’UOMO Vogue magazine, as photographed by Bruce Weber, according to JustJared.com. It seems the cover is in celebration of the 25th anniversary of "Thriller." Those were the days...so many faces ago.

Morning brew...

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaabecks.jpg
Why was David Beckham (above) heading back to England so abruptly yesterday? His father has suffered a heart attack...Did you hear about how Tony Bennett's ex-wife is still quite bitter toward the crooner. Though they split in 1979, they only divorced earlier this year and Bennett has since remarried... OK, I think I gotta book a trip to NYC. The Broadway production of "The Color Purple" is gonna be adding some superstar talent in the coming months: Chaka Khan, BeBe Williams and "American Idol" finalist LaKisha Jones...Ja Rule shares his thoughtless thoughts on gay marriage...There is word that Candice Bergen is going to appear in the "Sex and the City" flick. She had a recurring role as a "vogue" editor in the series...The gay love story between Luke and Noah on "As trhe World Turns" is heating up...

MORNING QUOTE:
"I no longer want to be billed as a 'film star.' I am not Julia Roberts, a superstar who people want to see smiling and well-dressed in film after film. It bores me. And I act much better opposite James Wood or Robert De Niro than Richard Gere."
-- Sharon Stone in the French magazine Madame Figaro.

Stone, whose leading lady days seem to have ended with "Basic Instinct 2" anyway, also said: "I hate being compared to Joan Crawford. I don't like her as an actress or admire what she achieved."

My two cents: Oh, brother...

September 26, 2007

See stars on the set...

This A Socialite's Life TV clip is really cool. It shows such stars as Brad Pitt, Jennifer Anniston, Will Smith and the cast of "Sex and the City" on the sets of their current movies. Also seen is the controversial Isaiah Washington on the set of "Bionic Woman." Will his widely reported slams of former "Grey's Anatomy" co-star T.R. Knight hurt the new show's chance at ratings success? It debuts tonight opposite the "Grey's" spinoff "Private Practice."

Chris Evert is accused of being "the other woman"

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaevert.jpgChris Evert used to be the number one tennis player in the world, winner of seven French Opens, six U.S. Opens and three Wimbledons. She also won the Australian Open twice and it is her romance with one of that country's most famous athletes, golfer Greg Norman, that has cast the one-time America's sweetheart as a homewrecker.
Read all about it in the NY Post. Norman's fuming ex-wife says: "She came after him."
Chrissie, one of my favorite tennis players ever, is a twice-divorced mother of three who was once engaged to Jimmy Connors and also dated Burt Reynolds and President Ford's son, Jack.

Afternoon blend...

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaspector.jpg
L.A. juries sure do have a tough time convicting celebrities of murder. O.J., Robert Blake and now...Phil Spector.
The judge in the Spector murder trial has declared a mistrial after jurors announced that they they were hopelessly deadlocked, according to TMZ.com. The jurors were deadlocked 10 - 2 but not sure which way. I'm guessing conviction. Prosecutors charged Spector with the murder of actress Lana Clarkson nearly five years ago. Spector's attorneys had argued Clarkson committed suicide.

In other tidbits...

Joe Simpson has given an interview where he says his daughters, Jessica and Ashley, have not gone the way of Britney and Lindsay because "we have a real family." Fair enough. Then he tells us what we all know: Ashley had a nose job...NFL star Michael Vick is in even more trouble with the law after testing positive for smoking marijuana...Now THIS is kinda nutty: It seems that Ryan Seacrest is gonna produce a sitcom starring David Hasselhoff for the E! channel. I sense a train wreck...Apparently, those resports of Jan and Marcia Brady enjoying some off-screen fooling around are not true, according to the publisher of Maureen McCormick's forthcoming book. Dammit. I liked that story a lot more than the creepy one about Greg Brady dating Florence Henderson...Question of the day: Is Paris Hilton really gonna boycott David Letterman's show because he made fun of her? C'mon, everyone makes fun of her.

And finally, video clip of the day: Britney Spears visiting a Quizno's in LA. You watch this madness and you feel for her, then you see her smiling and it seems clear: she likes it! But I don't think she liked the fact that the Quizno's employee, who apparently brought a tampon into the restroom for her, was filming part of their conversation. I ask you, how low can you go?

My chat w/William Baldwin and Candis Cayne about "Dirty Sexy Money" premiering tonight...

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaadirty.jpg
William Baldwin may be married to singer Chynna Phillips, but he and on-screen love Candis Cayne make a stunning couple in the new ABC series "Dirty Sexy Money" which premieres tonight. I chatted them up last week at a party marking the 40th anniversary of The Advocate magazine.
(BTW, in the photo above of Baldwin with co-star Donald Sutherland and Dan Rather, Rather is playing himself in a guest spot.}
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaabilly.jpg"Money" marks the first TV series for Baldwin, whose film credits include "Backdraft," "Three of Hearts," "Slither" and "Fair Game," among others.
"I had been putting together some projects for the last 3-4 years, but we couldn't get them off the ground," Billy said. "We pitched them, we sold them, we wrote scripts. But for this, I was an actor for hire. They said they had me in mind for this part and I went into the meeting and things just clicked in the meeting. Great show-runner, great cast, great concept, we're having a lot of fun."
Baldwin plays a politician running for the U.S. Senate who puts his family man image at risk by becoming involved with a transgendered woman played bvy transgender actress Cayne.
"Our storyline, it's a scandal. It's a scandal," Baldwin said, laughing.
Added Cayne: "I'm very fortunate to be cast in the role. I hope that people take from me and my character that this is nothing that is so out there and so weird that people can't identify with me as a human. We really need to do it in an accurate way and focus on telling a real story, not a fake story or a story that doesn't happen in our community. And I think that's what "Dirty Sexy Money" is doing."
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaadirty_sexy_money08.jpg
Baldwin told me that "the chemistry has been great" between he and Cayne. He then turned to her and said: "When I first met you, I think I was a bit nervous to try and convey to you that I was like totally cool, totally accepting and waiting with open arms for us to meet each other and know each other and work together."
At the first table reading, they shook hands then Baldwin took her and hugged her and squeezed her.
"That helped so much," Cayne said.
Baldwin said he has no plans to hold back when it comes to their love scenes: "I was saying in hair and make-up the other day, I said 'We kissed in the scene and it was good for television, it's good for movies the kiss we had, but in a real relationship, we would have kissed totally different from that - we would have been totally going for it.
And I said, 'I don't know if Candis thinks I'm afraid to do that because she thinks I'm uncomfortable with it. If anything, I wanted to go for it."

In addition to Baldwin and Cayne, the cast includes such heavyweights as Donald Sutherland, Peter Krause and Jill Clayburgh.

Morning brew...

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaajlo.jpgGood morning!!!
Apparently no one believes that Jennifer Lopez is not pregnant. The main reason: no one believes JLo would let herself get that FAT!!!...I hear that Jennifer Aniston has signed for a new movie opposite Aaron Echkart...the ever erratic Britney Spears hit the town last night with blue contact lenses and some kind of mermaid hair weave....Kiefer Sutherland may have been driving with three times the legal limit of alcohol in his system the other night, but he wasn't so drunk that he didn't stop and sign some autographs for fans before hopping into his car. TMZ.com has a video...the school where the children of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are attending in NYC are fed up with the paprazzi. And who can blame them? I ask you: how interesting is it to look a pictures of the movie star couple picking up their kids? Not so fascinating folks...

Freeman and Kinnear chat up "Feast of Love" at premiere...

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaafeast.jpg
Attended the premiere of the romantic tale "Feast of Love" in Beverly Hills last night. Before I tell you about the incredible pumpkin ravioli that was served at the after-party, I'll share with you some of the red carpet action at the Motion Picture Academy Theatre.
Morgan Freeman was first to arrive and was in a singing mood. It all started when a reporter from "Extra" asked him to sing a little of the show's theme song. She got him going and he didn't stop. Soon he was singing Marvin Gaye's "Let's Stay Together" and when I asked him the secret to his long marriage, he sang: "Love Will Keep Us Together." Well, just the first few words. Singing apparently has very little to do with it: "Our secret is communication. Talk, talk, talk, talk, talk."
Freeman was the first cast member to arrive for the film's premiere but he was soon joined by co-stars Greg Kinnear, Rahda Mitchell, Billy Burke, Toby Hemmingway, Stana Katic, Shannon Lucio and director Robert Benton.
Kinnear was stumped when he was asked by a reporter what the secret of lasting love: "Lasting love? I don't know, look it up on Wikepedia.com!"
But he had an answer for me when I asked about working with Freeman for the first time: "He's such a gentleman and he's so funny. He just makes me laugh and I never saw that coming. He's a very endearing man and it was an honor to work with him. I think he's one of our great American actors."
Kinnear, Freeman and nearly all of the rest of the ensemble cast showed up for the premiere of the film which opens nationwide on Friday. Only Jane Alexander and Selma Blair were absent.
"I have been blessed with working with some of the best actors alive and this cast is as good any group of actors I've ever worked with and that's saying a great deal," Benton told me. "They are just an amazing group of actors. There's not a weak link. Everyone is just phenomenal."
For Mitchell, her role in the movie has her torn between love interests played by Kinnear and Burke and she plays it so well.
"I'm a bad girl," she says, laughing. "It's an edgy character who's not immediately likeable but someone you kind of have to find and explain in a real way. I'm in love with Billy Burke but he's married and I end up marrying Greg Kinnear and breaking his heart."
I wanted to know how it felt to break Greg Kinnear's heart. Seems like such a nice guy after all.
"It was so much fun breaking Greg Kinnear's heart because he's such a wonderful actor and he really measures
the tone of this piece in that he plays comedy in such a naturalistic way and then he goes to tragedy and it's so heart-moving and soulful."
For director Benton, he considers the film one of the most important that he's made: "It is a movie about the
sheer mystery of love. It is is tragic, it is funny, it is erotic, it is intimate. It is about friendship and it is about passion. I wanted people to come away with a sense of the mystery of love."

I gotta say, i really liked this movie. It's different from most and was the perfect balance to oh-so-violent "The Kingdom" which I saw on Monday night. Oh yeah, and the pumpkin ravioli. Delish! They would only serve you one at a time but a reporter from Variety managed to get two without having to wait in line again. Not me. The server looked at me with a face that seemed to say: "Only one ravioli for YOU, Holywood Joe..."

Christian Clemenson debuts as a regular on tonight's "Boston Legal"

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaachristianclemenson.jpg
It's nice to have a recurring role on a show like "Boston Legal" and even nicer when you win an Emmy for outstanding guest actor for it. But what is nicest of all for actor Christian Clemenson is that starting with tonight's season premiere, he is a regular member of the cast as Jerry "Hands" Espenson, a lawyer with Asperger's Syndrome.
"I have a contract now," says the actor. "And that's always nice."
The ABC show has a 90-minute premiere airing at 9:30 p.m. after "Dancing With the Stars." I caught up with Espenson less than a week after he lost his bid for a second Emmy. He told me he keeps the satuette from 2006 in his bathroom at home so his friends, who are mostly actors, can make a fantasy speech in the mirror without anybody knowing about it.
There certainly is no shortage of Emmy winners on the set of the legal drama: "I did a scene last week and there was John Larroquette with five Emmy awards, Candice Bergen with five Emmy awards, William Shatner two Emmy awards, James Spader [three] Emmy awards and me with one Emmy award. What other show has a cast like that? I felt like, 'You have to be good because this is unbelievable! So, it's great. It's a dream job. I pinch myself all the time to make sure it's really happening."
So what's in store for his character this season?
"He, who had no social life, suddenly has a social life. And that creates havoc and comedy, terror and a lot of wonderful things."

Mariska Hargitay predicts an Emmy for Cynthia Nixon's turn in tonight's "Law & Order: SVU"

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasuv.jpg
Caught up with Dick Wolf and Mariska Hargitay a few days before last week's Emmys and them about "Law & Order: Special Victim's Unit " which begins its ninth season tonight at 10 p.m. on NBC. Emmy winner Cynthia Nixon guest stars as a woman with multiple personalities.
"It's awesome, better than ever," says Hargitay, who lost the Emmy to Sally Field was won last year. "Cynthia Nixon in the first show, I couldn't even speak she was so genius. It's crazy. It's one of my favorite episodes. She's gonna win the Emmy right now, mark my words."
While the franchise's original show, "Law & Order" remains on NBC [premiering in January] and will include Jeremy Sisto as the new cop and Sam Waterston will be the new DA, a role previously played by Fred Thompson who is now running for president. "I'm thrilled," Wolf says of Thompson's run. "Everytime he's out there, they're playing the 'Law & Order" theme. I can't complain."
Meanwhile, "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" begins its new season on USA instead of on the broadcast network.
"We're getting a lot more promo on USA, for obvious reasons, than we got the last five years on NBC. So I think the show is going to be a real engine for USA in term of getting advertisers to look at it a different way. I'm very optimistic. I think the show can run for a lot of years on USA."

David Beckham appears to be running from paprazzi in this new picture. That's not really his style though. Maybe the soccer star is just trying to stay in shape in case he makes a return to the L.A. Galaxy!

Do you care that the hit-and-run charges have been dropped against Pamela Bach?...I care that Maya Rudolph, who reportedly was going to leave "Saturday Night Live," will be back next season after all...
And finally...another one of TV's "The Bachelor" couples has split. This is shocking! I thought reality love was forever.

BREAKING NEWS: CelebrityTV.com is reporting that Kiefer Sutherland has three previous DUI arrests dating back to the late 80s. Below is a YouTube video of Kiefer three sheets to the wind at Christmastime...

Kiefer Sutherland BUSTED!

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaakiefer.jpg
We all know that Kiefer Sutherland likes to have a drink or two or more. But early this morning, his partying ways caught up with the Emmy winning star of "24." Kiefer, seen here last night at an industry party in LA, was busted for D.U.I. According to TMZ.com, Sutherland was pulled over around 1:35 AM PST on the corner of La Cienega and Beverly. (right near my favorite Taco Bell!). Cops stopped him for making an illegal U-turn then he failed a field sobriety test. The actor, who save the entire country each season on "24," was arrested for misdemeanor DUI and taken to the Hollywood Police station. He was booked at 4:09 AM and released at 5:42 AM on $25,000 bail.
He has a previous DUI arrest so this could cause some legal troubles for the popular star.

The arrest came on a day that Sutherland is to be honored by The Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA) for his driving skills "commitment to Canada and to Canadian performers." I had received an invite but the event has now been t to the press, TMZ reports. Obviously, they don't want this DUI incident to take away from the ocassion but c'mon, you know that's all anyone will be thinking about...
Best of luck to Kiefer though...seems like a good guy who needs to hire a driver!
