Bath, body and home fragrance sale

Melangeeaudeparfumbigpic.jpgWalk into Melange Apothecary in Sherman Oaks and you are suddenly surrounded by beautifully wrapped packages of fragrances stacked as neat as can be.

There are lotions, candles, bath soaps, and, along the back wall, a perfume laboratory that recalls Chemistry 101 at its most feminine. The small shop has dark wood floors and is painted a few shades greener than Tiffany blue. White shelves let the merchandise speak for itself.

Many of Melange's products are made by artisans and/or imported from Europe, so prices are higher than, say, Bath and Body Works, but basic hygiene is not why shoppers come to Melange.

"I'm all about little luxuries," the owner, Denise Estrada, said when I stopped by recently.

Her fragrant delicacies become a bit more affordable during a sale that starts Saturday, September 6 at 10 am. Go tomorrow and expect mimosas and bagels alongside discounts of 40 to 60% off.

Certain summer fragrances are...

...40% off. Cote Bastide soaps are 40% off. All bath salts from Abahna are 50% off. All Millefiori and Mor products are 50% off. Bluewick candles, a brand you may recognize from Anthropolgie, are 50% off.

The sale is one of two during the entire year, making it a good time to stock up on gifts or even - gasp - start your holiday shopping. The sale ends the following Saturday.

The perfume bar is not on sale, sadly. Denise says her prices are already low considering you can spend hours in her shop mixing your own scent. There are more than 80 essential oils and fragrances to choose from.

A 60 ml bottle of your own eau de parfum is $42 and you can mix your individual scent into other formulas, like body wash ($18) or a home diffuser ($30). One of my favorites was a tiny tub of beeswax that you can scent with your own perfume. Rub a little on your finger, then rub it on your neck or wrist. A 7 ml container was $10. Ingenious for traveling.

Visit them at 13632 Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks. (818) 385-0495. Parking in rear. Hours are 10 to 5 Saturdays. The store is open Sunday, September 7 from 10 to 2 for the sale but will otherwise be closed Sundays until October, when they will be open 10 to 3 on Sundays. Closed Monday. Open 10 to 6 Tuesday through Friday.
